I acknowledge the title perhaps seems an insensitive statement. In no way do I mean to diminish the horrific losses we have faced this last year on so many levels.

However, please hear me out.

Unexpectedly, the Pandemic has been one of the best years of physical health some of us have had in ages, given that in many places, people had to wear a mask, and everyone was asked to be mindful of how their behaviour can impact others. People were encouraged to look out for each other.

A year ago last week, the Pandemic was declared, and many began to isolate, work from home and learn from home. People started to use terms like social distancing, have opinions about hand sanitizers and whether or not they should be wearing masks. I don’t think any of us thought it would still be going on a year later.

As most now know (or don’t) and accept (or don’t), masks can reduce the risk of spreading respiratory infection. In this last year of mask-wearing, which is mandated where I live, I have felt safer than I have in a long time.
