How to Not Make New Year’s Resolutions

Do This Instead.

“You should be far more concerned with your current trajectory than with your current results.”

- James Clear, Atomic Habits

Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet?

I have not. For two good reasons:

  1. Who knows what the year will bring? 2020 was a pear-shaped gong show.

2. I know, in the dark night of my soul, that I will likely not keep the resolution because it is too confining and overwhelming.

If you check the interwebs on this, the accepted statistic is that 80% of all New Year’s resolutions fail. There have been some studies done by researchers at Scranton University finding that only 19% of individuals keep their resolutions, with most being abandoned by mid-January.

Did you know that humans have been making resolutions for 4,000 years? Despite most of us generally accepting that resolutions often don’t stick, we love a moment, don’t we? We love new beginnings. Starting fresh. The most popular day to start a diet and exercise program is on a Monday. This year, the first day back right after the New Year’s holiday was a Monday. Perfect timing for all those shiny resolutions, no?

Perhaps not.
